After Darren Clarke's brilliant win in The Open which just so happened to coincide with China winning the Snooker World Cup and it got me thinking. Could you organise a World Cup based tournament in today's golfing world.
Obviously at first you could only shuffle tournaments around so much so every 2 or 4 years is a possibility. It could be held on years where there is no Ryder Cup. The host continent could change.
How many per team. Well you are going to need a minimum of 2 and by trying to keep the format condensed a maximum of 3 players playing mixture of foursomes, four balls and singles. For example golfer A is captain but sends golfers B and C out to play foursomes in morning. Then a captain pick single match before a four ball afternoon. You may need to spread this over a day and a half.
As of the Scottish Open the following countries could field decent teams.
England Donald,Westwood,Casey
N.Ireland McIlroy, McDowell, D.Clarke
USA Mickelson, Stricker, Kuchar
S.Africa Schwartzel, Oosthuizen, T.Clark
Australia Day, Scott, Allenby
S.Korea KJ Choi, Kyung-Tae, Y E Yang
Sweden Karlsson, Hanson, Jacobson
Italy E.Molinari, F.Molinari, Manessero
Spain Quiros, Garcia, Jiminez
Japan Ishikawa, Fujita, Ikeda
Denmark Hansen, Bjorn, Oleson
France Jacquelin, Bourdy, Havret
Scotland Laird, Gallagher, Lawrie
Germany Kaymer, Cejka, Seim
Your only short 2 countries or teams and special teams could see
South America featuring Villegas, Cabrera, Romero
England B Poulter, Rose, Fisher
USA B Watney, Fowler, D.Johnson
This idea will take some organising but I feel there is potential there.
