Formula 1 2012 Calendar

Next seasons calendar has been released and the first thing to note is next season will be a 20 race season running from March to November.
Turkey has lost its place in the calendar and there is a few back to back races next year so that could work better with drivers aiming for a minimum points haul over a fortnight.
We start with Australia and Malaysia back to back and that will be interesting seeing how teams cope with transporting and drivers with air mileage and that is before you turn up to a Malaysian grand prix which is never predictable either racing or weather.
April see's China and India remaining and then a break before Spain and Monaco in May.
A break either side of the Canadian grand prix before back to back European (Valencia) and British grand prix. Back to back German and Hungarian grand prix are followed by back to back Belgium and Italian races.
We have another break either side of the Singapore grand prix and then back to back Japanese and Korean races. Abu Dhabi and Bahrain (hopefully) are back to back late October/early November before the final back to back races from America and Brazil.

Australian Grand Prix - Melbourne - 18th March
Malaysian Grand Prix - Kuala Lumpur - 25th March
Chinese Grand Prix - Shanghai - 8th April
Indian Grand Prix - Greater Noida - 22nd April
Spanish Grand Prix - Barcelona - 13th May
Monaco Grand Prix - Monte Carlo - 27th May
Canadian Grand Prix - Montreal - 10th June
European Grand Prix - Valencia - 1st July
British Grand Prix - Silverstone 8th July

Formula one TV rights row

I returned home from a weeks holiday to find that soon Formula One coverage will now be shared with Sky. Now before I jump on my high horse I should explain that I have SkySports so it will not affect my viewing.
The point is when F1 was on ITV the commercial breaks ruined the viewing and based on this season when could you jump to an advert. The way this season has gone you are going to miss something. People didn't mind the football predominantly being on Sky because the cash injection helped the game. Some might say that that has gone to far now and F1 like budget rules should be in place.
The biggest worry for me is the quality of programme that Sky will provide. The BBC have just got a good team with Brundle and Coulthard's chemistry being both entertaining and informative. As an avid sports fan it is the sport that the BBC shows that makes the license fee bearable. Are the BBC now going to reduce license prices. I doubt it. So now I am supposed to pay just as much for half the viewing.
The BBC may full well show extended highlights after the race on weekends when Sky is showing the race but it won't be the same.
Maybe the time for the BBC to change it's organisation is upon us and a more business attitude is needed. Nobody will object to an increased license fee if the quality of programming was better. Instead of family favourites being re-run they opt for new programmes that are not a shade on BBC classics.
Then there is Joe Bloggs who until now didn't bother with Sky but will have to consider buying a package just to watch programmes the BBC is to poor to show.
And if everybody stopped watching TV and paying their license fee to "cut costs" where would that leave the BBC. At the moment it is funded by the public yet we have no say as to what we watch. In it's day the BBC was an institution to be proud of but nowadays it is slipping behind the times. Auntie please sort yourself out. We want to remain loyal to the Beeb so please make it easier for us.

2014 World Cup European Qualifying

And so amidst the chaos of failed bids and bribery rotting the foundations of the beautiful game, the European qualifying groups are to be drawn this week and England could get a tricky group.

The European countries are divided up into 6 pots.

Pot 1

England, Spain, Holland, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Norway and Greece.

Pot 2

France, Montenegro, Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Slovenia, Turkey, Serbia and Slovakia.

Pot 3

Switzerland, Israel, Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Ukraine and Hungary.

Pot 4

Northern Ireland, Scotland, Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, Lithuania, Albania, Austria, Poland.

Pot 5

Armenia, Finland, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Moldova, FYR Macedonia, Azerbaijan, Faroe Islands.

Pot 6

Wales, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Malta, Andorra, San Marino, Kazakhstan, Luxembourg.

So this works out to 9 groups, 8 of which will hold 6 teams and 1 that will hold 5.

The very best England could hope for would be

England
Slovenia
Belarus
Albania
Faroe Islands
Andorra.

But when has it ever been that easy. Not in my recollection so a more likely group could see

England
France/Russia
Switzerland/Republic of Ireland/Ukraine
Romania
FYR Macedonia
Wales/Iceland

Well that's what could be and we will have to wait till the draw is made to see how bad England's latest "Group of Death" is.

Premier League - 4 leagues in 1

Last season was probably the tightest on record. Games became to difficult to predict and while it proved a nightmare for pundits and experts, for the genuine football fan it was fantastic. However I fear that could be about to change with 4 separate leagues being fought out within this seasons Premier League.

Starting at the top and I don't see anybody finishing above Manchester United this season but Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City should finish in Champions League positions. Fighting all the way for Champions League football will be Arsenal and Tottenham but I feel both will fall short.

Arsenal and Tottenham are joined by Everton, Sunderland and Aston Villa who will all be trying for Europa League spots. The London clubs should have enough about them but things have been quiet at Goodison Park this summer so injury permitting I'm expecting Everton to buck their usual trend and get off to a good start to the season.

The next little mini league is to decide who finishes 10th and in comfortable safety zone. These include Fulham, Bolton, Stoke, West Brom and Newcastle United. That is assuming Joey Barton stays and if he goes then Newcastle will find themselves in the 4th mini league for relegation struggle.

The teams that I feel are going to struggle most are the 3 newly promoted clubs QPR, Norwich City and Swansea City along with Blackburn Rovers, Wolves and Wigan. If Wigan can keep Rodellga and N'Zogbia then Premier League safety is assured but as both may go I worry for Wigan's safety. I also feel Blackburn could be made to rue sacking Alladyce and probably one of the new clubs. I'm here for a reason so if it was my money I'd go with Wigan, Blackburn and Norwich to go down.

That's that then now I can enjoy the season unfold and see how close these thoughts were. As long as the football is entertaining that's all that this football fan really wants.

English Players to look out for this season

With the state of English football in apparent decline I take a look ahead and see who to watch out for this season.

Arsenal
Along with Jack Wilshire I expect Keiron Gibbs to feature more and new signing Carl Jenkinson is eligible for England still. He is however also eligible for Finland so may have a choice to make sooner rather than later. Should Oxlade-Chamberlain sign then I don't see him playing regular but occasional chances to show his talent.

Aston Villa
Darren Bent's move to Villa now depends on him performing as a one man team. He excels at this although he is under huge pressure now. I still feel he will score and remain an England squad player. Can Mark Albrighton carry on last seasons excellent form? Will Nathan Delfouneso or Gabby Agbonlahor get enough games to impress. Sub and cup is there best bet i fear.

Bolton Wanderers
Whether Gary Cahill remains at Bolton will be unsure until deadline day but his performances will be under more scrutiny. Fabrice Muamba was a member of the U21 squad and a decent season from him could see a top 6 club come calling.

Chelsea
Who will Sturridge play for and if it is to be Chelsea how often. Youngsters Ryan Bertrand and Josh McEachran need chances to shine so hopefully either loans or rotation will see to that.

Everton
Should Leighton Baines continue from last season then Ashley Cole will have serious competition for Englands left back slot. This is a big season for Jack Rodwell and may feel other less consistent performers have secured big moves this summer. Youngster Jose Baxter could get games and needs to impress.

Fulham
Two English players need to shine this year for different reasons. Bobby Zamora needs another good season to get Capello's attention and David Stockdale is being touted around all the top clubs. Many are surprised Arsene Wenger hasn't come calling.

Liverpool
New signings Downing and Henderson will be looking for solid consistency as they look to push themselves further into Capello's plans. Hopefully Gerrard will survive until the European Championships but he is to valuable to Liverpool and may have to consider international retirement after that. Carroll and Glenn Johnson will need better years than last season while depending on appearances Jay Spearing, Martin Kelly and John Flanagan could see friendly action.

Manchester City
Being highly critical Joe Hart needs more consistency. Currently he is England number one and the statistics back this up. Micah Richards, Adam Johnson and Nedum Onuoha all have promising prospects again depending on appearances. None of them are going to feature for club or country stuck on the bench all year like Shay Given.

Manchester United
Interesting to see how many games Phil Jones and Chris Smalling get between them. A good future England prospect there. Fergie has also insisted Welbeck and Cleverley will be involved this year and along with Carrick becoming more prominent and Wayne Rooney along with the addition of Ashley Young who is going to have an excellent year. You can tell he will thrive at Old Trafford and United are starting to provide more options to the England team. Could Owen given a run of games force his way into Capello's thinking.

Newcastle United
I controversial choice but keep an eye on Joey Barton's performance this year. He looks like he may have chilled somewhat maybe even maturing. Yes he will still get bookings and sendings off but if you take that away from him you lose what is good about the player. Possible England squad player in my eyes.

Norwich City
Should James Vaughan or on loan Kyle Naughton have stellar campaigns surprise England features can't be ruled out. In Vaughan's case though a 20 goal plus season would be needed.

QPR
Many were surprised he didn't play for England more when with Cardiff and Jay Bothroyd now has the chance to fire himself right into the England reckoning.

Stoke City
Ryan Shawcross performances over recent years have led many to question Man United's decision to sell him. One to get in and around the squad.

Sunderland
Craig Gardner and Connor Wickham will have a chance to show what they can both do this year. Both could make late calls for selection.

Swansea City
Scott Sinclair has points to prove and could be the difference between Swansea surviving and surviving well.

Tottenham Hotspurs
Dawson, Huddlestone and Defoe need games simple as that.

For the next friendly match I would like to see the following players included.

Goalkeeper
David Stockdale

Defenders
Richards,Smalling,Jones,Gibbs

Midfield
Gardner,Rodwell,Barton,Sinclair

Forwards
Bothroyd,Welbeck

To be honest it has been my view for a number of years that friendly matches should be used for trying new players so there are a few who could be eligible depending on circumstance. Player power needs to stop in the England team and I'm not convinced they have the right captain but that's a different topic. There are to many who get picked based on salary rather than form. Should any of these statistically perform better than the first teamers then their selection will be justified.

Premiership North vs South All star match.

I conversation cropped up the other day after an all star game. The debate was whether or not such a match could be played in England and whether or not this fixture could replace the Community Shield.
After some thought and research I have reached the following conclusions.
First such a match could take place and be renamed something like the Premiership All Star match. There is no reason why this match should not benefit charities or communities though and to underline this the teams of 18 could be picked by the public.
Could such a match exist in the Premiership though. Last season there were 11 teams you could place as northern and 9 southern. For geography and balance we draw an imaginary line placing the Midlands and Wales in the South section. Please note that we are not carving the Premiership up just for the notion of a north vs south game these are who last years clubs were eligible for.

North

Manchester United
Manchester City
Newcastle United
Sunderland
Everton
Liverpool
Blackburn
Bolton
Blackpool
Wigan
Stoke

South

Arsenal
Chelsea
Tottenham
West Ham
Birmingham
Aston Villa
West Brom
Fulham
Wolves

please note that this season all 3 promoted teams would be eligible for the Southern section making 10 teams each to choose from.

Here is 2 possible 18 man squads from the 2 sections last season.

North

Hart,Huth,Vidic,Kompany,Baines,Samba,Meireles,Adam,Nani,N'Zogbia,Barton,Nolan,Yaya Toure,Rooney,Hernandez,Tevez,Rodallega,Gyan

South

Cech,Ivanovic,Hangeland,Cole,Terry,Parker,Wilshire,Gardner,Bale,Dempsey,Young,Downing,van der vaart,Malouda,Van Persie,Bent,Odenwinge,Drogba

So there you go that's what is possible and I think the idea has merit. One voice needs help so discuss with your friends and pass the word.

Sir David Beckham

I saw a report today that David Beckham could be knighted by the Queen in her new years honours list. Really. Now I'm not putting Beckham down for a second he was an inspiring captain for his country and an icon to kids worldwide. As an ambassador for sport in this country his presence surely helped get the London Olympics although even he wasn't big enough to overcome the bribes of the 2018 World Cup bid.
The problem for me is at his age he is simply to young to be a Sir. I know that sounds wrong or ageist but that is not the case. Maybe I'm from an age not befitting the modern world. He is a deserving OBE and I always thought that then you received the CBE and then a knighthood. I know I'm being old fashioned and I acknowledge his many charity works and football academies he dedicates himself to. If Terry Wogan and David Beckham can become Sirs then why not someone like Ryan Giggs.
I'm not saying that Beckham should not be awarded a knight but just not yet in my eyes. I would hate to think Beckham is only receiving this honour through his friendship with Prince William. David Beckham is someone the British public can be proud of. Nobody would begrudge him a CBE in the new years honours but I feel jumping to the Knight stage is somehow wrong. I don't know. I find myself completely confused as to which way I should lean. As a Manchester United, England and sport fan I'd be delighted for him. The parent part of me is unsure. I wonder if anyone else feels this.

Armchair Sport: The Blade Runner

Armchair Sport: The Blade Runner: "The hot talking point in the Athletics world at the moment is whether South African and double amputee Oscar Pistorius should be allowed to ..."

The Blade Runner

The hot talking point in the Athletics world at the moment is whether South African and double amputee Oscar Pistorius should be allowed to run against able-bodied athletes. His recent time of 45.07 qualified him for this years World Championships and has made him selectable for the 2012 Olympics.
Now the debate over whether or not he should be running against able-bodied athletes has reopened but people are getting carried away for a second. Because he shaved half a second off his personal best they assume he is gaining an advantage with the flexing of his blades. I reckon if you could measure it that Usain Bolt has contact with ground less than Pistorius. His time of 45.07 is still way off the world record of 43.18. If Pistorius had suddenly dipped under 44 seconds then there would be a reason to question him. All he has done is earn the right to compete with able-bodied athletes. OK his time would have finished him in 5th place in Beijing but the Olympics is not only about the winning. The stories are long and infamous of Olympians who didn't come close to winning but for taking part. For being the best they can be.
Now I have read two quotes from former British 400m runners from different points of view. One a former English 400m runner and consistent runner-up to Michael Johnson seems to suggest that because you can't prove whether or not he is gaining an advantage, he therefore must be. He also compares Pistorius to an 44.5 runner who has his legs amputated and has the same type of blades as Pistorius fitted but runs 41 second times. I'm sorry but you can't declare somebody has an advantage over other competitors just on a hypothetical scenario. It would be like saying if Man United played against a team who turned up with 8 men and saying they might have an advantage.
Interestingly that was the only former British athlete to lean towards an advantage to Pistorius. Another former Welsh 400m runner and all round fun guy only had positives to say and his point that as long as the IAAF deem Pistorius worthy to race able-bodied athletes then the matter should be over. Lets be honest if an advantage has been gained and he was to win I would rather him than someone on performance enhancing drugs. While that problem remains then arguing who has an advantage over who is futile.
For clarity and an honest opinion I asked an anonymous current British 400m runner his thoughts on competing against Pistorius and how he would feel being beaten by him. The response I got was one echoed by the vast majority of people. They felt Pistorius may have some advantages but this is balanced by some of the disadvantages. He carried to say what a top lad Pistorius is which seems to indicate any success Pistorius has will be more popular than a Darren Clarke Open win. And success for Pistorius himself will be fulfilling a life long dream. From 11 months old when the decision to amputate both legs below the knee a fire burned inside him. Now that dream is a reality and to all people regardless of physical ailment or not. He is an example that nothing is possible if you work hard.
And so my line on this is simple. Until he is breaking able-bodied records or causes someone to trip during a race or they can prove he is gaining an advantage then as long as he is quick enough to compete then let the boy race. That's all Oscar Pistorius wants.

Copa America Finale

By the time Europe wakes on Monday morning, the 2011 Copa America winner will have been crowned. That's right that tournament that you wanted to follow but couldn't stay up for has reached its climax and has been unpredictable to the last.

If you missed the early stages all you really need to know was Mexico surprisingly were eliminated before the Quarter finals along with Bolivia, Costa Rica and Ecuador. Colombia were setting the tournament alight and Brazil and Argentina stuttered into the Quarter finals.

Host nation Argentina were knocked out on penalties by old enemy Uruguay and Peru caused the surprise of the tournament by knocking Colombia out 2-0 in extra time. Venezuela knocked out personal tip Chile 2-1 while Brazil imploded in their penalty shoot out against Paraguay by missing all 4 of their penalties.

Parity was restored in the first semi final with Luis Suarez scoring twice as Uruguay beat Peru 2-0. The other semi between Paraguay and Venezuela had been a group match which ended in a 3-3 draw. There was to much riding on this match for both teams and after extra time with the scores still 0-0 penalties were needed to separate them. Paraguay won the shoot out 5-3 to set up a final showdown with Uruguay.

If Uruguay win they will have won a record 15th Copa America.
Paraguay have made the final without winning a single match inside 90 minutes in the tournament so far.
A draw in 90 minutes and a Paraguay win is my prediction.

Alexis Sanchez, Cesc Fabregas

It seems at last that the summer struggle to land Chilean star Alexis Sanchez is over. Barcelona confirmed they have had an offer accepted and will officially announce his signing over the weekend.  A couple of interesting points of note. The original fee is only around £23m and with add ons will rise to around £34m. That strikes as good business for Barcelona but you have to assume Udinese came out looking well to. It's a lesson to the money orientated Man City top brass. Udinese could of held out for more and forced Barcelona to pull out their interest. But everything was amicable Sanchez gets a wonderful chance in his career, Barcelona get one of their top targets and Udinese have time and funds to rebuild and invest some of his fee.
The second point of interest is what does this mean for Cesc Fabregas. Pep Guardiola announced a transfer budget for the summer and it was somewhere around 40 million euros. I forget the exact figure. By signing Sanchez do Barcelona have enough to bid around £35m which may be enough to persuade Arsenal to sell him. I agree with Barcelona's valuation of Fabregas has decreased since last summers attempts to sign him. He didn't cost Arsenal anything and he has given the club loyalty. Now he sees that if he waits for Wenger get it right his time could be over. These young players who come to England as teenagers can not be blamed when they reach the age when they want to move on. Wenger should feel pride in the player Fabregas has become and give him his blessing and a message in his ears. Go and make that team your own.

Golf World Cup

After Darren Clarke's brilliant win in The Open which just so happened to coincide with China winning the Snooker World Cup and it got me thinking. Could you organise a World Cup based tournament in today's golfing world.
Obviously at first you could only shuffle tournaments around so much so every 2 or 4 years is a possibility. It could be held on years where there is no Ryder Cup. The host continent could change.
How many per team. Well you are going to need a minimum of 2 and by trying to keep the format condensed a maximum of 3 players playing mixture of foursomes, four balls and singles. For example golfer A is captain but sends golfers B and C out to play foursomes in morning. Then a captain pick single match before a four ball afternoon. You may need to spread this over a day and a half.
As of the Scottish Open the following countries could field decent teams.

England     Donald,Westwood,Casey
N.Ireland   McIlroy, McDowell, D.Clarke
USA         Mickelson, Stricker, Kuchar
S.Africa    Schwartzel, Oosthuizen, T.Clark
Australia   Day, Scott, Allenby
S.Korea   KJ Choi, Kyung-Tae, Y E Yang
Sweden    Karlsson, Hanson, Jacobson
Italy         E.Molinari, F.Molinari, Manessero
Spain       Quiros, Garcia, Jiminez
Japan       Ishikawa, Fujita, Ikeda
Denmark  Hansen, Bjorn, Oleson
France     Jacquelin, Bourdy, Havret
Scotland  Laird, Gallagher, Lawrie
Germany  Kaymer, Cejka, Seim

Your only short 2 countries or teams and special teams could see

South America featuring Villegas, Cabrera, Romero
England B Poulter, Rose, Fisher
USA B  Watney, Fowler, D.Johnson

This idea will take some organising but I feel there is potential there.

Troubles at Arsenal

A problem which I highlighted a few weeks ago has slowly reared its head at the Emirates. Everybody except it seems Arsene Wenger can see that Arsenal are going to struggle this season. Champions League football may be beyond them.
The faithful Arsenal fans that loyally left Highbury for the curse of the Emirates, only want to see one thing this summer. They want Wenger to spend big. United look like they have strengthened a title winning team and excitement surrounds Chelsea. Liverpool have added well while Man City have the means to add whoever they want provided they want money over medals) and the chasing pack of Everton, Tottenham and even maybe Sunderland are all going to be fighting over those Europa League places.
The signings Wenger has made this summer are not what the fans were looking for. After last seasons general failure from a new African forward we will see another try his luck this season. The area where Arsenal were perhaps the strongest was attacking players. Meanwhile two top keepers have moved clubs with Wenger seemingly uninterested and Freidal was a free transfer don't forget. If Wenger doesn't buy a good stopper they won't win anything again this season. In defence it is not as drastic as it first looks. Gary Cahill and Chris Samba potential targets but I fail to see why more has not been done before Arsenal went on their pre-season tour. Get the players you want in, lose those that don't and build team bonding from there. The other area Arsenal are crying out is an old school tough tackler. A Roy Keane or Vieira. However those players seem to be at a premium this summer with everyone wanting to add some steel to the middle of their teams. Joey Barton is a surprise name being chucked around but that may be all there is left by the time Wenger acts.
I worry for the man who foolishly feels his job is safe but I have one statistic that might wake him up. Since Arsenal won the FA Cup in 2005 and moved into the Cursed Emirates, apart from Sir Alex Ferguson at United only David Moyes has kept his job for so long without winning a trophy. While Moyes can call time whenever he likes at Everton it is no longer a luxury Wenger has. Look at Ancelotti if you think I'm being melodramatic. With Arsenals tough start to the league and a potential European banana skin to overcome, calls for Wengers head may be reality by as early as September or October. I really do worry about the troubles at Arsenal.

Sports Personality of the Year

Its early in the year I know but some of the candidates for Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY or SPY for short) are being mentioned and thinking what awards categories there are and I don't think there is much to debate on.

Team of Year will probably be England Cricket team. That could change with decent results in cycling, rowing, athletics or swimming but winning an Ashes series in Australia was some achievement.

Coach of the year is a difficult one and may not yet have been won. Andy Flowers and Charles van Commenee are leading this race. You may not like Charles van Commenee but he is doing a great job and performances are moving into world class territory and credit has to go to him.

Youngster of the Year.  Another tough category and one that may be taken by a young track and fielder at the world championships.

SPOTY. 3rd place I give it to Alistair Cook. A fine year with the bat and records tumbled in that Ashes tour.
2nd place I give to McIlroy and he is unlucky as he had 1st in the bag until The Open. Had he not capitulated in the Masters things would of been done and dusted for him.
1st place can there be any doubt. After a few dodgy years have not seen the expected winner but not just for this year but his well documented ordeal away from golf sees Clarke a landslide winner.

These are subject to change given performances in many fields still to go but the top 3 are going to take some beating.

Are City being fair

The whole sorry saga over Carlos Tevez seems as if the selfishness of the football clubs owners has won and an unhappy player will remain there until January at least.
There are those who will accuse Tevez of being greedy or holding the club to ransom but that just isn't the case. It is a simple decision that all fathers would understand. His family and especially his daughters can not settle in England. Tevez voiced concerns last season and City through money at a situation hoping for it to go away. If somebody offered you more money to try then you are going to. The way City have handled this whole affair is a disgrace. OK they want value for their star asset but have they not considered what the other players make of this situation. How would the English players feel if they were being told they could not see their kids. They respect Tevez as a player and for his ability but understand his point. All City have done is try to hike up his valuation to frighten off interest, niggle with the clubs who have made offers and question other cubs payment schedules. Corinthians were willing to risk 25% of TV revenue for Tevez but obviously the cash isn't there yet. All City wanted was for Tevez to be forced to stay because City know once he is on a football pitch he never gives anything less than 100%. Now City are reluctant to swap Tevez out of the Premiership and I find it disgusting. I wouldn't usually say this but maybe Tevez should stay over in Brazil. It would of been nice if football could of been put to one side and a loan deal with Tevez's wages being paid would of seen City not lose face or finance. Maybe that is why so many players don't want to join. The money may be attractive but there has to be substance there as well. It's Tevez and his family I genuinely feel for in all of this and a warning must go out to all City would be players and youngsters out there. Don't make a move based on money because as Tevez is being shown, if things are not working out, clubs have lost their humanity.

Is twitter bad for sport.

This was a debate brought to me yesterday and there are a few points of interest I felt were raised.

Firstly having a son with Autism I have noticed a definate plus side as to why sports stars must be allowed to use twitter. Anybody with a charity or fund raising ideas has the ability to reach a wider audience when their favourite stars retweet links. Simply there is good that twitter can do but everybody needs to use it correctly or should get banned from the site.

Twitter Additions.
Following Darron Gibson and Darren Bent receiving abuse on twitter I wondered whether the programmers could add a simple block button or twitter as a united community should start a Twitter Offenders Register. Basically give people the choice as to whether they receive the dispicable abuse or not and in the worst cases having a list for everyone to see who is just on twitter to verbally assault sport stars and celebrities would act as a deterrent.

Twitter Users
When you join any social network as a person in the public eye, you have to expect fans to follow you. So you have a duty to your clubs, yourselves and the fans to behave in an appropriate manner. Ryan Babel is the example here for his fine when tweeting about ref Howard Webb. Yes referees may be over-protected but the respect campaign is working as long as consistency is maintained. That was poor judgement on the players part but the one that puzzles me is the Leeds United situation. Personally I would assume that information regarding a player injury would be available on a clubs website so why Simon Grayson banned his squad from twitter surprises me.

And in a nutshell that is my view on twitter. Twitter has a place in sport as it allows the average fan to follow favourite or young aspiring athletes and get closer to them than they otherwise would do. It has the possibility to break the stereo type that sports stars are beyond our reach. There are a lot of small good causes that can benefit from simple retweets and if everybody is aware of what is acceptable to post then I really fail so see a problem.
